While Acadiana will remain under the gun for a lower end severe weather risk through Thursday morning, another higher-end severe weather outbreak will be likely from the northern part of the state overnight into Mississippi, Alabama and points eastward Thursday.
Per the Storm Prediction Center (SPC), Acadiana is expected to remain under a marginal to slight risk of severe storms overnight through Thursday, while an enhanced threat of severe storms will continue to be likely from Central into Northern Louisiana overnight...and then across a good part of the deep south Thursday into Thursday night.
Storms in the northern part of the state may produce large hail, damaging winds and perhaps a couple of isolated but violent tornadoes of EF2+ strength (111 mph+) or greater.
Fortunately for Acadiana, like the last several severe weather threats, storm intensity has been limited by an atmospheric "cap" thanks to more stable marine air feeding in from the Gulf of Mexico.
This cap is expected to be weaker in the northern Acadiana parishes where there could be some intense storms possible overnight.
Any storms that do get going anywhere in Acadiana however, will bear a close "watch" as wind dynamics will remain favorable for anything from damaging winds to hail and a few tornadoes...hope the cap holds again!
For now, we are keeping the chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms in the 60% range through midday Thursday but drier more stable air and sunshine should return later Thursday afternoon with highs in the mid-80s.
Away from the storms, wind gusts to 30-40 mph were reported across Acadiana Wednesday afternoon.
Latest model guidance continues to show the same through this evening with some gusts as high as 45-50 mph away from the storms possible into this evening, especially for the northern areas of Acadiana which could lead to some downed branches & sporadic/isolated power outages in a few areas.
Gusts in any severe storms will likely approach 60-70 mph or greater.
Elsewhere, a substantial severe weather threat will continue for the Deep South and Southeast U.S. into Thursday night.
After the early storm threat Thursday a nice stretch of weather is expected for Acadiana over the next 5-6 days with the next chance of rain arriving by next Wednesday...and likely without any severe weather threats.
