National Weather Service: Louisiana expecting severe weather, hail on Wednesday - Daily Advertiser

Severe weather, including large hail, is expected to make its way across Louisiana Wednesday and into Thursday.

The threat will likely be similar to the severe weather events that the state has experienced in the last two weeks, said Donald Jones, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Lake Charles.

An area of low pressure will move through the area followed by a cold front, which is expected to bring widespread showers and thunderstorms, some of which may be severe

"Of those types of severe weather we'll be looking for, it looks like large hail is going to be our biggest overall threat with this system," Jones said in a Tuesday briefing. "But we can't rule the possibility of damaging winds and tornadoes – a little less certainty with regards to those."

Some areas also could see localized flash flooding, especially in parts of central Louisiana that have already seen large amounts of rainfall in the last few weeks, Jones said.

The highest threat is to central and northern Louisiana, Jones said. The area along and above the Interstate 10 corridor is at a slight risk for severe weather, which is 2 out of 5 on the weather service's risk scale. That area also has about a 5% chance for tornadoes, according to the weather service.

South of I-10, the area is at a marginal risk for severe weather, which is a 1 out of 5 on the weather service's risk scale. That area has about a 2% chance for tornadoes.

The threat will begin Wednesday afternoon and extend through Thursday morning as the cold front moves through the area, Jones said.

The threat will likely begin at about 1 p.m. Wednesday in southwest Louisiana and last through 9 a.m. Thursday; begin at about 3 p.m. Wednesday in Central Louisiana and last through 9 a.m. Thursday; and begin at about 3 p.m. Wednesday in south-central Louisiana and last through noon on Thursday.

Within the last two weeks, the state has bee through two severe weather events. On April 12, a storm system brought tornadoes to the Monroe area, damaging homes and an airport.
