Green Country is no stranger to severe weather, and given our current circumstances with the coronavirus pandemic, 2 Works for You has put together a guide on how to plan for severe weather during these difficult times.
The Tulsa Area Emergency Management Agency (TAEMA) is urging all Tulsa residents to prepare for the severe weather Spring will bring while they are staying at home.
Since Tulsa does not have community shelters, due to the coronavirus pandemic, TAEMA advises Tulsans to come up with a plan now, prior to a storm hitting your area.
Best Places to Seek Shelter at Home
TAEMA says if residents haven't already found a safe place to take shelter during tornado season, now is the time.
They advise your safe place should be on the lowest level of your home, and away from windows and external walls.
2 Works for You Meteorologist Cline Boone says to seek shelter in the central part in an interior closet or bathroom. He says to try to have as many walls as possible surrounding you.
What you Need in Your Shelter
A storm shelter needs to have water and no-prep food, such as crackers and granola bars, says Meteorologist Clint Boone.
Meteorologist Clint Boone also suggests adding:
- a blanket
- pillows
- a change of clothes
- important papers
- a first aid kit
Should you already have a tornado shelter, TAEMA says it's important that you register your storm shelter with the City of Tulsa. This will allow first responders to find you, should a storm hit your home.
