Alabama is bracing for its second round of severe weather a little more than a week.
The first wave of storms moved through the northern part of the state this morning. Other strong storms blew through central Alabama withdamage reported in Chilton, Coosa and Tallapoosa counties.
Jim Stefkovick, meteorologist with the Alabama Emergency Management Agency, said after a brief lull, supercell storms are expected to form in Mississippi and begin entering western Alabama after 2 p.m. before spreading eastward. This will likely be followed by a line of potentially severe weather. Areas south of Tuscaloosa/Clanton/Lafayette line will have very unstable atmospheric conditions with a potential for strong tornadoes and straight-line wind gusts of 70 mph. The atmosphere is expected to be more stable farther north, including along the I-20 corridor, but a couple of tornadoes are still possible, along with widespread straight-line wind gusts, Stefkovic said.
According to the EMA’s timeline, the storms could arrive in southwest Alabama by 2 p.m. and last as long as 10 p.m. Central Alabama could see storms by 3 p.m. lasting as late as midnight. The southeast corner of Alabama could see storms arrive around 6 p.m. lasting until 4 a.m. Monday.
Widespread rain of 2-4 inches is possible through Monday morning with some locations receiving as much as 6 inches. A flash flood watch for areas south of I-20 is in place until 1 a.m. Monday.
