Another round of severe weather is expected to roll through the southern states today, with showers and thunderstorms forecast to begin this afternoon.
John Lewis, a meteorologist at the Little Rock National Weather Service, said he doesn’t expect today’s storms to be as severe as last week’s, saying that the worst of the storms will hit areas that are experiencing higher temperatures than Arkansas is expected to have.
At press time Saturday, temperatures in Union County were not expected to exceed the mid-70s. Lewis said states south of Arkansas, like Louisiana and east Texas, will probably bear the brunt of severe weather due to higher temperatures reaching the low 80s, though he did note that south Arkansas could be hit harder than expected if temperatures rise.
“There’s warmer air trying to get in from the south, ahead of the storm system. How warm that air gets will determine who gets the worst of it,” he said. “Right now, it looks like it will stay to our south. … The last couple, three days are showing the same thing, the data hasn’t deviated too much.”
Lewis said those in south Arkansas’s primary concern should be hail, which he said may have been seen last night as well. He said he expected the hail to be relatively small.
Many in south Arkansas are still without power from severe weather that hit the area last week. According to Entergy Arkansas, just under 5,000 customers remained without power in south and southeast Arkansas as of 4 p.m. yesterday. Lewis said today’s storms will probably not cause the same level of damage as last week’s, which left approximately 128,000 in Arkansas without power.
“As far as them not being out there when it’s raining and lightning (restoration efforts could be affected), but as far as adding to the damage, probably not,” Lewis said.
If the weather does turn out to be more severe than forecast, particularly if tornadoes form, Lewis said Arkansans should be prepared with a plan to find safety.
“Most people down here don’t have basements. If you have an underground shelter or safe room, that’s the best place; but if not, an interior room without windows in a building on permanent foundation (is next best),” he said. “Put as many walls between you and the outside as you can … You wouldn’t want to be on the outer wall, you want to be more inside.”
The weather is expected to improve by Monday, which Lewis said will be mild and tranquil with high temperatures in the 70s. On Tuesday, temperatures may rise to the 80s, he said.
On Wednesday, severe weather may hit again; however, it was too far out Saturday to predict with 100% accuracy, Lewis said.
“Our next chance of rain, showers and thunderstorms will be during the Wednesday and Wednesday night timeframe. It may be another round of severe weather,” he said. “It may again be mostly to our south. We can’t say with a lot of confidence where exactly that’s going to go yet, but that’s another one to keep an eye on.”
