Severe weather possible Thursday across Alabama -- and it could start early - AL.com

Alabama faces yet another chance for severe weather on Thursday.

The storms could come in two rounds. The first round is more certain but could be less intense than the second. The first round will also affect how the second round plays out.

The National Weather Service cautioned that this will be a “conditional” event: There is lower confidence in storms developing, but if they do there’s a higher confidence they could become severe.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has severe weather risks for Alabama on both Wednesday and Thursday.

There is a marginal risk for much of west Alabama for late Wednesday into early Thursday morning, which means isolated severe storms will be possible.

Then there’s an enhanced risk (Level 3 of 5) for all of south Alabama and much of central Alabama for storms anticipated later Thursday morning into the afternoon hours. An enhanced risk means numerous severe storms will be possible.

Round 1 of storms could move into west Alabama as early as 4 a.m. Thursday and last through the morning.

The early-morning storms could contain damaging winds and hail.

Round 2 may begin later in the morning and last into the evening, but how it plays out is less certain and depends on how the early morning storms behave.

The Round 2 storms will bring the wind and hail threats again as well as the risk of tornadoes -- if they can develop.

There’s also the threat of more flooding rain.

A flash flood watch will go into effect tonight for several central Alabama counties; Pickens, Tuscaloosa, Sumter, Greene, Hale, Perry, Bibb, Chilton, Marengo, Dallas, Autauga and Lowndes.

The weather service said up to 2.5 inches of rain will be possible through Thursday afternoon.

Drier weather will follow the storms on Friday, but rain chances enter the forecast again with the approach of another system on Saturday.
