Severe weather — including possible tornadoes, hail and strong wind gusts — is expected across much of Mississippi on Sunday, with greatest risk from early afternoon into the night.

Shelters: Mississippi shelters open under threat of severe storms
Penny to dime size hail reported
8:04 p.m.: Penny to dime size hail was reported in Forrest County.
Ping pong ball size hail reported
8 p.m.: Ping pong ball size hail was reported in South Mississippi.
Tornado warning issued
7:51 p.m.: The confirmed tornado is moving east toward Highway 589 and Old Highway 11 in Lamar County.
7:45 p.m.: A tornado warning has been issued for Forrest and Lamar counties until 8:15 p.m. Sunday.
Possible tornado moving toward Lamar County
7:36 p.m.: According to the NWS, a strong tornado was reported to be on the ground and moving toward Purvis in Lamar County.
Marion, Lamar counties storm update
7:15 p.m.: Mike Edmonston, a senior NWS meteorologist, said Marion and Lamar counties were under a tornado watch and could see hail the size of ping pong balls. Radar indicated there was a tornado in that area, he said, though that has yet to be confirmed.
“It’s definitely not over," Edmonston said of severe weather in Mississippi.

6:55 p.m.: A tornado warning has been issued for Lamar and Marion counties until 8 p.m. Sunday.

6:40 p.m.: A tornado warning has been issued for Walthall County until 7:45 p.m. Sunday.
Tornado watch issued
6:37 p.m.: A tornado watch has been issued for Adams, Claiborne, Clarke, Copiah, Covington, Forrest, Franklin, Jasper, Jefferson Davis, Jefferson, Jones, Lamar, Lawrence, Leake, Lincoln, Marion, Simpson and Smith until 9 p.m. Sunday.
Wind damage reported
6:30 p.m.: Two trees were blown near the area of County Road 24 and County Road 2422 in far northeast Jasper County.
Power outages reported
6:20 p.m.: More than 8,500 residents are without power around the state.

- 4,258 residents are without power.
Mississippi Power
- 51 residents are without power.
Southern Pine Electric
- 1,039 residents are without power.
Southwest Mississippi EPA
- 1,494 residents are without power.
More thunderstorm warnings issued
6:19 p.m.: A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Franklin and Lincoln counties until 7 p.m. Sunday.
Reports of two-inch hail
6:14 p.m.: Reports of large hail around two inches spotted in Newton County.
More thunderstorm warnings issued
6:13 p.m.: A strong thunderstorm will affect Lincoln, southeastern Jefferson, northeastern Franklin counties until 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
6:06 p.m.: A strong thunderstorm will affect southwestern Warren, Claiborne and north Jefferson counties until 6:45 p.m. Sunday.
Tornado warning issued
6:03 p.m.: A tornado warning has been issued for Amite and Pike counties until 7 p.m. Sunday.
Flash flooding, wind damage reported
5:49 p.m.: A tree was blown down across Highway 11 just north of Enterprise in Clarke County.
5:46 p.m.: Trees were blown down and power outages were reported in the area near the intersection of Smith County roads 103 and 520.
More thunderstorm warnings issued
5:46 p.m.: A strong thunderstorm will affect south central Jefferson, northwestern Franklin and east central Adams counties until 6:15 p.m. Sunday.
5:42 p.m.: Trees were blown down along Smith County Road 504 East of Pineville in Smith County.
5:40 p.m.: Trees were blown down along Gilbert Joyner Road in northern Lauderdale County.
5:38 p.m.: A large tree limb was blown across the road along New Providence Church Road near Chunky in Newton County.
5:33 p.m.: Trees were blown down in the 2000 block of Mississippi Highway 513 North of Quitman.
5:32 p.m.: Trees were blown down near County Road 164 and Country Road 165 in Clarke County.
5:22 p.m.: A tree was blown down on Highway 429 near Thomastown in Leake County.
5:17 p.m.: A tree knocked down a power line on Highway 18 in Rankin County.
5:12 p.m.: Several trees are down on Didlake Road in Copiah County.
4:48 p.m.: Law enforcement in Claiborne County reported flash flooding with a few trees down on Rodney Road and Old Port Gibson Road.
More thunderstorm warnings issued
4:39 p.m.: A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Clarke, Jasper, Lauderdale and Newton counties until 5:45 p.m. Sunday.
Reports of rotation spotted in Clarke County
4:20 p.m.:
Eddie Ivy, director of the Clarke County Emergency Management Agency, there have been multiple reports of hail and rotations in the county.
Ivy said they haven't yet received reports of damage but noted a tornado warning is in effect until 4:30 p.m.
More thunderstorm warnings issued
4 p.m.: A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Jasper, Rankin, Simpson and Smith counties until 5 p.m. Sunday.
Tornado warning issued
4 p.m..: A tornado warning has been issued for Clarke County until 4:30 p.m. Sunday. According to the NWS, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over Sykes, 7 miles east of Quitman moving east at 30 mph.
More thunderstorm warnings issued
3:55 p.m.: A severe thunderstorm warning has been extended for Rankin and Scott counties until 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
3:45 p.m.: A strong thunderstorm warning has been issued for southern Rankin, northern Simpson and northwestern Smith counties until 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
Flash flood watch extended
3:37 p.m.: A flash flood warning has been extended for Attala, Carroll, Choctaw, Claiborne, Clarke, Clay, Copiah, Hinds, Holmes, Humphreys, Issaquena, Jasper, Jefferson, Kemper, Lauderdale, Leake, Lowndes, Madison, Montgomery, Neshoba, Newton, Noxubee, Oktibbeha, Rankin, Scott, Sharkey, Simpson, Smith, Warren, Webster, Winston and Yazoo counties.

3:36 p.m.: A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Clarke County until 4:15 p.m. Sunday.
3:33 p.m.: A strong thunderstorm will affect central Lauderdale County through 4 p.m. Sunday.
3:28 p.m.: A severe thunderstorm warning will affect east central Jasper and central Clarke counties until 4 p.m. Sunday.
3:27 p.m.: A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Madison, Rankin and Scott counties until 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
Flood rescue in Vicksburg
3:25 p.m.: The fire and police departments in Vicksburg responded to people trapped in a car from floodwaters at Sky Farm near Zollinger's Hill. A Vicksburg police officer removed the people from the car.
Flash flooding reported
3:21 p.m.: According to the NWS, several streets in Vicksburg are experiencing flash flooding.
More thunderstorm warnings issued
3:11 p.m.: A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Claiborne, Copiah and Hinds counties until 4:15 p.m. Sunday.
3:04 p.m.: Strong thunderstorms will affect Jasper and western Clarke counties until 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
Dime, quarter size hail reported
3:04 p.m.: Dime to quarter size hail was reported in Scott County.
Flash flood warnings issued
3:01 p.m.: A flash flood warning has been issued for Lowndes, Noxubee and Winston counties until 6 p.m. Sunday.
More thunderstorm warnings issued
2:46 p.m.: A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Hinds and Madison counties until 3:45 p.m. Sunday.
2:42 p.m.: A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Jasper, Simpson and Smith until 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
2:34 p.m.: A severe thunderstorm warning will affect southwestern Jasper, southeastern Smith, northeastern Covington and northwestern Jones counties until 3 p.m. Sunday.
National Weather Service warns of 'decent size' hail
2:30 p.m.:
Janae Elkins, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson hesitated to compare what's expected from Sunday's storm to last week's deadly tornadoes but said strong tornadoes are possible.
"Last week was a rare thing, however, this is Mississippi so any type of event we get it's possible we can expect tornadoes," Elkins said. "In most of the area, until 7 p.m., tornadoes are possible. There's the possibility that a few may be strong but, as of right now, the stuff that's coming in from the west has been kind of behaving."
Elkins noted with the severe thunderstorms, especially south of I-20, "decent size hail, anywhere from a dime to tennis ball size is possible."
More thunderstorm warnings issued
2:08 p.m.: A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Issaquena, Warren and Yazoo counties until 3:15 p.m. Sunday.
2 p.m.: A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Newton, Scott and Smith until 3 p.m. Sunday.
1:48 p.m.: A strong thunderstorm will affect northwestern Warren and southwestern Issaquena counties until 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

1:29 p.m.: Reports of hail — from nickel size to quarter size — were received from Leake and Madison counties.

1:25 p.m.: A strong thunderstorm will affect Rankin, northwestern Smith and southwestern Scott counties until 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
12:53 p.m.: A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Copiah, Hinds and Rankin counties until 2 p.m. Sunday.
Tornado watch issued
11:50 a.m.: A tornado watch has been issued for several Mississippi counties until 7 p.m. Sunday.
