It looks like Alabama will have to deal with another threat for rough weather exactly one week after Easter’s slew of severe storms.
NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has most of Alabama in a severe weather risk for Sunday, and has heightened probabilities of storms over parts of central and south Alabama.
Tornadoes will again be possible, as well as damaging wind gusts, hail and heavy rain.
The timing may change, but as of now the prime time for severe weather looks to be Sunday afternoon and into the evening, according to the National Weather Service.
The setup could be similar in some ways to last week. A warm front is forecast to lift northward from the Gulf Coast across Alabama, putting some of the state in the “warm sector” and raising the risk for supercell storms, which could spawn a tornado or two and hail.
After that forecasters are anticipating a complex of storms to track into the state from the west, bringing with it the risk of damaging winds along with tornadoes.
The severe weather risk -- as of Thursday morning (and this could change) -- is higher for south Alabama than north Alabama and will depend again how how far north the warm front travels, according to the weather service.
The weather service in Birmingham has the southern part of central Alabama in an enhanced risk for severe weather on Sunday, with a slight risk over the rest of the region:
The weather service in Mobile has interior parts of its forecast area under an enhanced risk, with a slight risk in place for the coastal areas:
The storms are expected to clear out of Alabama by Monday, but the weather service is also monitoring the possibility or more storms later in the week next week.
