It’s mid-May, which means that strong-to-severe thunderstorms usually aren’t too far off in the future. On Wednesday, strong storms could be in the picture for a familiar mid-spring target: Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma.
The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has outlined a fairly wide area across the southern and central Plains as potentially being at risk for stronger storms on Wednesday. Large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes could all be in the forecast with Wednesday’s storms.
The main driver behind Wednesday’s severe weather threat? Lots of heat and humidity. Warm, unstable air will flow north out of the Gulf of Mexico, spiking temperatures well into the 80s and 90s. Plenty of moisture will accompany those warmer temperatures.
Storms need energy, often and typically in the form of heat and humidity, for those stronger storms to form.
That, coupled with changing wind speeds and direction at the surface, will lead to the possibility of all modes of severe weather for Wednesday, including tornadoes and large hail.
“Supercell wind profiles will be in place and the potential for all severe hazards will exist from the far eastern (Texas) panhandle/western (Oklahoma) into central (Kansas) from Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday night,” the SPC wrote in their discussion about Wednesday’s storms.
Those stronger storms could shift south and east into Thursday and Friday, mainly due to plenty of moisture and instability.
After a cooler start to the week across the potential impacted zone, temperatures will quickly rebound by mid-week, allowing the potential for some stronger storms to develop. After Wednesday’s storms, though, temperatures will gradually slide back closer to seasonable averages for mid-May.
