A total of 555 Minnesotans were hospitalized with COVID-19 on Saturday, 257 of them in intensive care units. The ICU cases showed a slight improvement from Friday's count of 263, the highest total since the pandemic began.
Fourteen more deaths were reported by the Minnesota Department of Health in Sunday's report. The state's daily death toll has hovered around 30 since Wednesday, the highest rates since the pandemic arrived in Minnesota March 7. The highest daily death toll to date was 35, reported Thursday.
No new deaths were reported in the three-county St. Cloud area. Stearns County cases rose by seven confirmed patients to 2,021, with 13 deaths. Benton County added two cases for a total of 177 and three deaths; Sherburne County cases rose by six to 243 with two deaths.
Statewide, the case count stands at 24,850, up 660 overnight; 1,040 Minnesotans have died. MDH says 18,695 patients no longer need to be isolated.
Of the 14 deaths reported Sunday, one victim was in their 60s, three in their 70s, four in their 80s, four in their 90s and one was older than 100. The patients lived in Clay, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Mower and Washington counties.
According to data released Friday morning, the latest available, Stearns County has had 118 COVID-19 hospitalizations so far, with 40 of those patients spending time in an intensive care unit. The average age of deaths in Stearns County is 75. The average age of confirmed infections here is 37.
About 67% of Minnesota cases are among people who live in private residences, 12% among residents of assisted-living or long-term care facilities.
Through Wednesday, 2,549 Minnesota health care workers have had confirmed infections; 158 required hospitalization.
No new cases were reported Sunday among staff or prisoners at the Minnesota Correctional Facility-St. Cloud. One worker and one inmate there were previously confirmed positive for COVID-19.
Cook and Lake of the Woods counties are the only two in Minnesota with no confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to MDH.
There are 6,098,804 confirmed cases of COVID-19 worldwide as of Saturday, including 1,773,020 in the U.S., according to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Research Center. 369,847 people have died of the infection worldwide, including nearly 103,853 Americans.
Minnesota ranks 19th among states for COVID-19 deaths; it is 22nd in population.
