Thunderstorms rumbled across all of Tampa Bay Friday night, but it was likely Pinellas County that got the worst of it.
Hail and strong winds battered Tampa Bay’s westernmost county, with some gusts reaching 60 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service. Duke Energy reported more than 6,000 residents were without power as of 9 p.m.
The worst of the storms have already passed, said Brian McClure, a meteorologist with Spectrum Bay News 9. But not before delivering a number of remarkable photos and videos that were shared to social media.
While St. Petersburg and Pinellas got the worst of the storms, a severe storm warning was temporarily issued for Hillsborough County in addition to Pinellas. To the south, Sarasota County also reported hail.
“Strong storms are currently ongoing in most coastal counties with a highly unstable atmosphere,” the weather service said in a release. “Storms should wind down over the next couple hours and conditions will remain quiet overnight.”
Tampa Bay will have a dry start to Saturday but could see more thunderstorms in the afternoon. The forecast high for Saturday is 93, with a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms after lunchtime.
