SANTA FE – New Mexico coronavirus infections and deaths remained below peak levels Wednesday, with state officials poised to relax additional business restrictions starting next week.

Top state health officials announced Wednesday that four additional New Mexico residents had died due to complications from COVID-19, bringing the state’s death toll to 329.

Two of the deceased were men who lived in McKinley County, which has been hit hard by the coronavirus outbreak. One was in his 20s and the other in his 50s.

The other two were a man in his 60s from San Juan County and a woman in her 80s from Bernalillo County who was a resident at The Village at Alameda, an assisted-living facility.

Meanwhile, there were 127 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, with San Juan and McKinley counties making up more than half that number.

A total of 24 new cases were reported in Bernalillo County, which has seen a recent decrease in infection rates, despite outbreaks at several nursing homes.

In addition, two new COVID-19 test results were confirmed among inmates at the Otero County Prison Facility in Chaparral, while one new case was confirmed at the Torrance County Detention Facility, which holds immigrant detainees under a contract with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

In all, New Mexico has now recorded 7,252 confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the first positive test result in March.

However, the Department of Health has now designated 2,638 cases – or about 36.4% of all cases – as having recovered.

There are also 210 individuals currently hospitalized in New Mexico with COVID-19 symptoms, a decrease from earlier this week.
