Crews will begin removing loose and dangerous rocks at the Ely's Peak Tunnel on Monday, a city of Duluth news release said.
The process is called rock-scaling and crews began to mobilize on the DWP Trail on Friday. A portion of the DWP Trail around the Ely’s Peak Tunnel will close as a result for about three weeks, the city said, including hiking and climbing routes around the work area.
The contractor will begin work at the tunnel and work their way east toward Spirit Mountain. During this time, the contractor will be dropping rock and trees onto the grade, which is the reason for the closure.
This work is a part of the DWP Mini-Master Plan. The Climbers and Superior Hiking Trail parking lots on Becks Road will have signage, and each trail leading to the tunnel will also communicate the closure and hazards of work being done for those wanting to use the trails, the city said.
Work is expected to be loud at times, as the contractor will be using drilling equipment to meet the goals of the project.
