Update: As North Texas remembers 'Terrible Tuesday,' storms in the forecast - Times Record News

North Texans face the prospect of severe weather this weekend.

The National Weather Service says much of Texas may be under the gun for severe thunderstorms Saturday.

As of Thursday, forecasters put Wichita Falls and parts of North Texas at Marginal Risk for severe storms while a large circle from west of Abilene to near Corpus Christie and Houston will be at Slight Risk. The greatest threat will be hail and high winds although a few tornadoes will be possible.

The Storm Prediction Center said in a forecast statement Thursday storms “will likely erupt Saturday night across some portion of west/central Texas. Widely scattered thunderstorm development is possible along a surface trough/dryline” from northwest Texas into central Kansas.

The storm system will pose a much greater threat on Sunday with southeastern states, especially Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia, in for a significant severe weather event that could include strong, long-tracked tornadoes.

As Americans cope with the COVID-19 pandemic, weather experts are predicting the added angst of a slightly above-average severe weather season. Private forecaster AccuWeather predicts a number of tornadoes comparable to those in spring 2019, which was an active season.

The nation has already seen 150 tornadoes in 2020, most of them small, but on March 3 tornadoes ripped through the Nashville, TN area killing 24 people and causing widespread damage.

Friday marks the 41st anniversary of the April 10, 1979 tornado that struck Wichita Falls, killed 42 people, and caused millions of dollars in damage. It is considered one of the costliest tornadoes in U.S. history. That tornado was one of several that raked North Texas and Oklahoma that day, claiming a total of 57 lives.
