CUSTER COUNTY, Colo. — One person in a group of seven hikers was injured Saturday afternoon after she triggered an avalanche, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC).

Custer County Search & Rescue said on Saturday around 2:45 p.m., its rescue team was paged to Horn Peak regarding a person who had been caught and carried in a soft slab avalanche.

Horn Peak, located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, is one of Colorado’s 13ers.

According to the CAIC, seven hikers had been descending Horn Peak’s northeast ridge and started to slide down a steep snowy slope toward a snow-filled gully. The first person who attempted this triggered a wet avalanche while sliding, and the avalanche carried her about 1,000 feet to the bottom of the gully.

The person, who was only identified as female, was partially buried with her head above the snow.

The female, who had numerous injuries injured, was extracted out of the field by a Blackhawk from Buckley AFB on Sunday at 12:10 a.m. and was transferred by ambulance to a local hospital, according to CCSAR.

In addition to CCSAR, El Paso County Search and Rescue, Fremont County Search and Rescue, Flight for Life and Colorado Army National Guard also aided in this rescue.

CCSAR is reminding backcountry users that avalanche conditions remain dangerous and to avoid snow travel when possible.
