A woman has been left with “severe” injuries after being attacked by a shark in Sydney’s eastern suburbs on Monday evening.

A spokesperson for NSW Ambulance told the Herald multiple units were called to Billyard Avenue in Elizabeth Bay about 7.45pm to treat a woman who had been pulled from the water.

“She had serious bleeding. Her injuries are severe,” the spokesperson said.

A helicopter and multiple units arrived at the scene to help the woman, believed to be in her 20s.

A nearby resident, who asked for his name to be withheld citing privacy, said he heard a scream from inside his home. He ran outside to find the woman trying to pull herself out of the water and onto the wharf.

“She had been attacked about 20 metres off from the jetty – there was blood all throughout the water and all over the jetty,” he said.

“She was badly hurt. Her leg did not look good”.

He said his neighbour, a vet, used a tourniquet to stem the bleeding before police and paramedics got there.

“She passed out before paramedics arrived, so we were really worried for a bit, but by the time paramedics were there and treated her she was speaking to them,” he said.

“She looked like she was going to be OK.”

The man said the injured woman lived in the building next to his.

He said no one was with her in the water at the time near the private wharf.

The woman was bitten on the right leg and suffered severe lacerations and blood loss.

She was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in a stable condition.

NSW Police said officers attached to Kings Cross Police Area Command assisted the paramedics at the scene.

“Police have been told she was swimming off the wharf at the time. Marine Area Command are patrolling the area as a precaution,” the spokesperson said.
