Tornadoes, severe storms possible late Monday and Tuesday in Alabama - AL.com

Severe weather will be possible for parts of south and central Alabama from late Monday night into Tuesday.

Tornadoes — including a strong one — wind gusts up to 60 mph and heavy rain will all be possible, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters cautioned that details of the event are still coming into focus, and it’s possible the severe weather risk could be upgraded for parts of the state in the future.

Forecasters added that it will also be very windy starting on Monday, and areas not expecting severe weather could see wind gusts as high as 45 mph, which could be enough to topple trees and knock out power.

The storms are expected mainly during the overnight hours, so Alabamians are urged to make sure they have several ways of getting severe weather warnings that could wake them up if needed.

The weather service also encouraged people to tell others that may not be weather aware about the approaching severe weather threat.

South Alabama is the area that is the most likely to see severe weather.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has added a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe weather for much of south Alabama for Monday night into Tuesday morning.

The rest of south Alabama and part of south-central Alabama has a Level 1 severe weather risk.

A Level 2 risk means that scattered severe storms will be possible. A Level 1 risk means isolated severe storms will be possible.

No severe weather is expected in north or north-central Alabama, but those areas could see strong non-thunderstorm wind gusts and heavy rain and the system moves through.

Areas in that part of the state could also see storms and heavy rain, with widespread amounts of 2 inches possible, according to forecasters.

The severe weather risk will carry over into Tuesday for the southeast corner of Alabama. Here is the Day 4 severe weather outlook for Tuesday:

As for south Alabama, the weather service in Mobile said rain and storms will be possible in south Alabama starting on Monday afternoon and should become more widespread on Monday night ahead of a warm front that will be lifting northward from the Gulf of Mexico.

Supercell storms, including tornadoes, could develop in areas along the warm front and south of it, forecasters said.

Then a squall line of strong to severe storms is expected to develop and move from west to east through the region from late Monday night into Tuesday morning.

Damaging winds and tornadoes will also be possible with those storms, the weather service said.

There could also be a lot of heavy rain with the storms. The weather service said parts of south Alabama could see 2 to 4 inches of rain in a short time, which could cause localized flooding.

Non-thunderstorm wind gusts of 30-45 mph will also be possible, forecasters said.

Strong onshore winds will also bring a high risk of rip currents, rough surf and gale conditions on the Gulf. Coastal flooding will also be possible.

Alabama escaped Friday night without any major severe weather issues. There were no severe weather warnings issued for any part of the state overnight, but the weather service has gotten a few reports of downed trees from strong winds.

Some areas in south Alabama reported heavy rain as well.

After the Monday-Tuesday storms depart, the next potential weather-maker is not expected until late next week. There will be the possibility Alabama could see strong storms again, but it’s too soon to say for sure, according to forecasters.
