Tuesday, January 2: The new year has arrived and with it, the winter chill has set in more fiercely across the entire country. While a lot of us are coping with the dip in temperatures by layering with a jacket or pullover, conditions up north are a lot more dire, and require more than a few layers of warm clothes to keep one from freezing.

Severe cold has been expanding its grip over parts of Northwest and Central India. Already, cold day to severe cold day conditions prevailed over Haryana, Punjab, and a few pockets of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, North Madhya Pradesh and Bihar on Monday (Jan 1).

Now, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), more extreme weather is on the cards for these regions this week.

Cold day to severe cold day conditions are likely to prevail in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday (Jan 2), Rajasthan until Wednesday (Jan 3), and Punjab and Haryana until Friday (Jan 5).

The IMD issues a cold day warning when the minimum temperature is below 10°C and the maximum temperature drops below the normal by 4.5°C to 6.4°C. A severe cold day warning is issued when this drop exceeds 6.4°C.

Exacerbating the already cold weather, dense to very dense fog will also blanket Punjab and Uttarakhand in the night and morning hours between Tuesday and Saturday (Jan 2-6). Similar conditions are likely in parts of Haryana, Chandigarh and Rajasthan until Wednesday (Jan 3), and in isolated pockets for the subsequent two days thereafter.

Meanwhile, dense fog is expected in Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday (Jan 2), in Uttar Pradesh until Thursday (Jan 4), and in Himachal Pradesh during the night and morning hours until Saturday (Jan 6).

In view of the cold wave and foggy weather, an orange alert (meaning ‘be prepared’) has been issued over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan for the next two days. Yellow watches (meaning ‘be updated’) have been placed over Madhya Pradesh, East Uttar Pradesh, Himachal and Uttarakhand for this duration.

Drivers are advised to drive slowly and make use of fog lights to prevent accidents. Travellers have been advised to stay updated about airline schedules, railways and state transport delays or cancellations. Over 25 trains in Delhi were delayed on Tuesday due to the foggy weather, the Indian Railways said.

The IMD also advises against prolonged exposure to cold. Individuals are instructed to wear several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight warm woollen clothing rather than one layer of heavy cloth. Covering the head, neck, hands and toes adequately is advisable as the majority of heat loss occurs through these body parts.
