The threat for severe storms continues to shift south toward the Gulf Coast on Friday after severe storms produced massive hail and damaging winds across portions of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas on Thursday.
The threat level on Friday is up to a slight risk (category 2 out of 5) for portions of Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, and Alabama. A marginal risk, meaning a chance for short lived or isolated severe storms, extends nearly to Panama City in the panhandle of Florida, in addition to a separate risk area in Southern Texas near Corpus Christi and Laredo.
A line of severe storms is expected to continue to move south and east along the leading edge of a strong cold front. Damaging downdraft winds will be the main threat within the line of storms but large hail is possible as well, especially if individual cells form away from the main line.
An isolated tornado or two will also be possible on Friday for the area highlighted which includes the I-20 and I-10 corridors.
Strong storms are expected to move along the I-20 corridor for a good portion of the morning before moving into the Jackson area around or just past midday. Storms should be able to tap into additional energy fueled by warm afternoon temperatures and high moisture content, possibly re-strengthening through the middle of the afternoon.
Storms could approach the I-10 corridor closer to the afternoon commute hours or through dinner time. A few isolated severe storms could continue into the evening in portions of South Texas.
Heavy rain is also possible with strong storms on Friday. Flash flooding could develop where storms are able to stall or train over the same area.
