Scattered severe storms possible today for part of Alabama - AL.com

A storm system will move through Alabama today and bring the chance for a few strong to severe storms.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has a slight risk (Level 2 out of 5) in place for southwest Alabama, including Mobile, which means that scattered severe storms will be possible.

A wider area that includes more of south Alabama and part of central Alabama has a marginal risk (Level 1), which means that isolated severe storms will be possible.

The storms are expected to develop ahead of a cold front. That front will bring rain statewide and a few storms, but the rest of the state is expected to be able to avoid severe weather.

The most likely time for storms will be this afternoon into tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

The strongest storms could bring damaging winds.

The National Weather Service’s radar in Mobile is out of service right now for repairs, but there are several others nearby so there should be no gap in coverage.

It will also be windy away from the storms, and the weather service has issued a wind advisory for all of central Alabama that will be in effect until 7 p.m.:

Much cooler air is set to follow behind the front for Saturday and Sunday. The National Weather Service noted that more record low temperatures will be possible both mornings.

Two cities, Anniston and Montgomery, had record lows on Friday morning as well. Anniston hit 39 this morning, breaking a record from 1989, and Montgomery dropped to 43 degrees, tying a record from 1944, according to the weather service.
