Emergency siren back for severe weather season - Iowa City Press-Citizen

The first Wednesday of the month has been the test day for the emergency siren since before Dave Wilson joined Johnson County Emergency Management. But for the month of April, Wilson decided he didn't want to add to the anxiety of residents so he forewent the April emergency siren sound check.

During April the department did test the siren's ability to receive transmissions and function physically.

"We can do a lot for testing without making a noise, but in the end you have to do an audible test to make sure," Wilson said. May and June tend to see more severe weather, he said.

Returning the test is a reminder that dangerous weather will pay no mind to the coronavirus' spread. "As we become accustomed to this new normal, it's important we resume our normal pattern because it is severe weather season," Wilson said.
