Travelers going toward San Francisco on Interstate 580 ran into a wall of traffic Friday morning after a fiery crash, the California HIghway Patrol said.
The wreck happened in the westbound direction of I-580 west of the Grant Line Road exit, and a fire burned afterward, the CHP said. The agency issued a Sig Alert for severe traffic just before 9 a.m.
The alert stayed in effect until about 11 a.m.
According to initial reports that the CHP was investigating, a vehicle swerved prior to the crash and had flames coming out from underneath it. The first reports of the wreck came at 8:21 a.m., the CHP said.
The far left lane of I-580 was blocked. The area is used frequently by commuters coming to the Bay Area from Southern California.
