Severe weather continues for parts of Alabama - AL.com

Strong to severe storms and heavy rain will continue to be possible across Alabama overnight, according to the National Weather Service.

A tornado watch continues for parts of central and south Alabama until 5 a.m. Thursday:

The National Weather Service has issued several tornado warnings overnight, including some for the Birmingham metro area.

A tornado warning continues for St. Clair County until 3:15 a.m.:

Earlier tornado warnings for Jefferson and Shelby county have been canceled.

Heavy rain also continues to be a concern, with many areas in north Alabama under areal flood warnings as of 9 p.m. and the National Weather Service in Huntsville getting reports of roadways under water.

The weather service has gotten several reports of wind damage and trees and power lines down from storms. Heavy rain has also caused some localized flooding.

The rain could really add up in some areas: The weather service said 6 inches will not be out of the question through early Friday for parts of the state.

Flash flood watches continue for much of Alabama in anticipation of this. They will be in effect until Thursday evening.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center maintains a slight risk of severe weather for much of Alabama. A marginal risk covers a part of eastern Alabama.

On Thursday the SPC has an enhanced risk over a very small part of southeastern Alabama and a slight risk over the a wider area in eastern Alabama (see maps above).

An enhanced risk means numerous severe storms will be possible. A slight risk means scattered severe storms are possible. A marginal risk means isolated severe storms are possible.

A series of disturbances has brought rounds of rain and storms ahead of a slow-moving cold front.

A threat for severe storms will linger into Thursday morning for parts of eastern Alabama. The weather service said there is a potential for a second round of severe storms to develop and affect those areas, mainly along and south of Interstate 85.

The cold front is expected to move into the state by early Thursday, and the threat for severe storms will end once it passes, although some light rain may linger behind it.

Cooler and drier weather is expected by Friday.

Another chance of heavy rain may become an issue next week, according to the weather service.
