This weekend is Alabama’s ninth severe weather preparedness sales tax holiday, giving shoppers a break as they stock up on needs for disasters.
The holiday began at 12:01 a.m. and ends at midnight Sunday.
Shoppers can avoid sales tax on common emergency supplies costing less than $60, while generators costing $1,000 or less can also be purchased free of the state’s four-percent sales tax during the weekend.

So what’s exempt? Here are the under $60 items:
*Batteries - AAA, AA, C, D, 6-volt, 9-volt, and cellular phone.
*Cellular phone chargers.
*Portable self-powered or battery-powered radio, two-way radio, weatherband radio or NOAA weather radio.
*Portable self-powered light sources, including battery-powered flashlights, lanterns or emergency glow sticks.
*Tarpaulin.
*Plastic sheeting.
*Plastic drop cloths.
*Flexible, waterproof sheeting.
*Ground anchor system, such as bungee cords, rope, or tie-down kit.
*Duct tape.
*Plywood, window film or other materials specifically designed to protect window coverings.
*Non-electric food storage cooler or water storage container.
*Non-electric can openers.
*Artificial ice, blue ice, ice packs or reusable ice.
*Self-contained first aid kit.
*Fire extinguisher.
*Smoke detector.
*Carbon monoxide detector.
*Gas or Diesel fuel tank or containers.
Coin, auto and boat batteries are not exempt.
