The National Weather Service continues to monitor the possibility for severe weather across much of Alabama later tonight.
But forecasters have scaled back the areas in Alabama that could see the strongest storms.
NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has a slight risk in place for parts of west and north Alabama and a marginal risk over parts of central and south Alabama.
A slight risk means scattered severe storms will be possible. A marginal risk means isolated severe storms will be possible.
Unfortunately it looks like it will be an overnight event for many in Alabama.
According to the weather service storms could move into northwest Alabama as early as 6 p.m. and track eastward through the night and into Thursday morning.
Damaging winds are the main worry, but there could be isolated tornadoes as well.
The weather service noted that it won’t take a whole lot of wind to bring down trees with the already saturated ground thanks to days of heavy rain. That means power outages will also be possible.
And there will be more rain. Up to 2 inches of additional rainfall will be possible, mainly in northwest Alabama, which could ramp up ongoing flooding concerns.
NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center has parts of Alabama in a moderate risk of excessive rainfall today in anticipation of this.
A flash flood watch will go into effect this afternoon for north Alabama and parts of central Alabama and last until Thursday morning.
The weather service expects a squall line of storms to develop ahead of a cold front, but the storms should weaken as they get into eastern Alabama.
A marginal risk for severe weather is carried over into Thursday for eastern Alabama.
Much cooler and drier air will follow the cold front on Friday, with lows in the 20s and 30s expected by Friday morning for north and parts of central Alabama and 30s and 40s expected for south Alabama.
It could be cold enough in some areas for any leftover rain to freeze overnight — so those heading out early Friday should take extra care on the roads.
More rain could return to the forecast by late Saturday in south Alabama and Sunday in northern and central Alabama.
