There's a struggle tonight to get Quincy school buses to your kids' bus stops. QPS officials said they are in severe need of bus drivers.
Mechanics like Tim Kathmann find themselves behind the wheel of QPS buses more often these days.
"We help them out when they really need it," said Kathmann.
Kathmann has worked on buses for nearly 20 years.
"In the first fifteen years, I would be lucky if I drove two or three times but I would say last year I drove twenty times and maybe about that many this year," said Kathmann.
As kids loaded the buses Monday, officials said they had all 80 routes covered but that's only because mechanics and supervisors drove.
"We have three of them that aren't filled right now. No eligible driver to take them so we have a couple of subs and then we have to dip into our supervisors and our mechanics just to keep those routes covered," said Director of Transportation Shane Barnes.
Barnes said they hope to hire 15 more drivers but the biggest challenge in hiring is that they work a split shift.
"Two in the morning and two in the afternoon. Some people pair that with cafeteria jobs here in the district to get their forty hours. Some people have other jobs, a lot of the people we've been getting lately, it's their retirement job." said Barnes.
And while driving a route isn't the main part of his job, Kathmann said it is rewarding when he does.
"When you help out a good group of kids and get them to school on time, there really is a feeling of accomplishment," said Kathmann.
QPS said a CDL is not required. Drivers go through 40 hours of training and the district covers the cost.
