It has been a wet February, and North Georgia can expect more rain, storms and the possibility of severe weather still to come this week, according to Channel 2 Action News.
The average rainfall for the month of Feburary is 4.2 inches. So far this month, Atlanta has recorded nearly 5 inches of rainfall, Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said.
“Already at less than halfway through the month, we are well above average rainfall for an entire month,” he said. “And tonight and tomorrow, another inch or more will fall.”
Much of Wednesday, at least, should get a break from the heavy rain. Only a 40% chance of isolated showers is in the forecast, according to Channel 2.
Metro Atlanta is off to a dry and warm start with temperatures in the 50s and some light fog. By the afternoon, Monahan said a warm front will help temperatures rise to the 60s and 70s in the city and points south.
Atlanta’s projected high is 67 degrees.
“It’s not going to be totally rain-free,” Monahan said. “We'll see a few showers as a warm front lifts on through,” he said. “That will be our story for today: Just light, scattered showers for your Wednesday.”
Even the evening drive should be mostly dry, he said. The rain is not expected to make its return until late Wednesday night, and Monahan said it’s coming in with a bang.
North Georgia is looking to get a repeat of last Thursday’s strong to severe storms and heavy rain. Thursday will be “a tough morning commute,” he said.
The line of storms is expected to reach northwest Georgia by 4 a.m. and move through the heart of metro Atlanta in time for the ride into work and school. There is a high chance of heavy rain, a moderate chance of damaging wind and even a low risk of isolated tornadoes, according to Channel 2.
“The tornado risk is not as high this time, but I still need you to be weather aware tonight into tomorrow morning,” Monahan said.
Once the storms move through, North Georgia will turn colder. Metro Atlanta could wake up to temperatures just above freezing Friday morning, and afternoon highs are not forecast to leave the 40s, according to Channel 2
Both Friday and Saturday should be dry before a 30% chance of showers returns to the forecast for Sunday.
Metro Atlanta traffic is responding favorably to the break in the rain Wednesday morning. There are no major delays on the interstates, the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center reported at 6 a.m.
“The pavement is dry this morning and overall the interstates are OK,” traffic reporter Mark Arum said.
