Story by WVUA 23’s Ellie Byrd.
Alabama has several fire colleges throughout the state. For the past 60 years, these colleges have helped and trained many people to become firefighters. The college is also responsible for many other things. As service demands on fire departments have expanded and changed throughout the years, the fire colleges have developed EMS, hazardous materials, severe weather safety and other programs to meet those changing needs.
Severe weather can strike at any moment in Alabama. The Alabama Fire College in Tuscaloosa is working along with the Emergency Management Agency (EMA) to host classes that will educate people on how to prepare for storms and see when they’re coming. The classes will also train people so that they are able to help first responders with victims during a crisis.
“We have a very good working relationship with the College, and we go and assist with classes and they provide training to us as well,” said Chris Williamson, the deputy chief of operations for the Tuscaloosa Fire Department. “This helps us be better prepared when we respond to emergencies in Tuscaloosa, but it also gives us the opportunity to interact with other fire departments across the state and across the country.”
The severe weather classes are going to be moved and will start before the storm season begins, which is in the fall, but the National Weather Service in Birmingham is offering the Skywarn Storm Spotter’s class on February 24th. This is a class that is going to help you with identifying storm patterns. You can register for classes here. You can take classes online or in person and even children can sign up.
