Severe Weather Awareness Week is being held in Kansas from March 2-6. The goal behind the week is to get you ready for the upcoming severe weather season and have a plan in place when storms move into your area.
Kansas experiences a wide variety of spring and summertime severe weather including tornadoes, damaging winds, large hail and flash flooding. Residents are encouraged to use this week to review their severe weather safety plans and practice what you would do as if the event was real.
The National Weather Service will conduct its annual statewide Tornado Drill at 10 AM on Tuesday, March 3. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the drill by practicing seeking a secure, safe shelter from a tornado. This test will be broadcast over NOAA All Hazards Weather Radio and many local television and radio stations including KRSL Russell Radio. Local officials may also sound their warning sirens. Area residents, businesses and schools are urged to treat the drill as if it were an actual tornado warning.
The National Weather Service will be focusing on several different severe weather safety topics through the week including preparedness on Monday, tornado safety on Tuesday, lightning safety on Wednesday, hail and wind safety on Thursday, and flood safety on Friday.
