Instead of severe weather, rain returns to KVOE listening area - KVOE

More rain came to the KVOE listening area late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. Severe weather was part of the forecast but not part of the picture as things evolved.

TV-13 meteorologist Doug Meyers says a cap or inversion layer, where air temperatures climb instead of fall, was a major player in us not getting any severe weather. Capping inversions typically cut off any updrafts, making it very hard to sustain any severe thunderstorms.

By halting the updraft process, storms can’t take advantage of other potentially favorable conditions like moisture, general instability or wind shear if a strong cap is in place.

Meyers also says meteorologists were looking at no severe weather as a possibility, even with the area under an enhanced severe weather risk.

Rain totals:

*KVOE studios: 0.35 inches
*Emporia Municipal Airport: 0.23 inches
*3 miles east of Emporia Municipal Airport: 0.26 inches
*10th and Weaver: 0.30 inches
*8 miles southeast of Emporia: 0.20 inches
*Allen: 0.25 inches
*Olpe: 0.10 inches
*Reading: 0.50 inches
*Saffordville: 0.45 inches

Temperatures climbed to 87 at the Municipal Airport on Tuesday. They won’t be nearly that warm for at least a week, and that includes a freeze warning for early Thursday morning. Lyon, Chase, Morris and Wabaunsee counties are currently involved from 1-9 am with temperatures expected around 30 degrees. The freeze could well kill unprotected plants.
