What to Know
- Strong to severe storms could pound parts of the tri-state area Friday afternoon into the evening hours; hails and tornadoes are possible
- Northern New Jersey and the Hudson Valley face the greatest tornado risk, though it is still minimal
- Temperatures soar to the mid-80s ahead of Friday's storms; the weekend turns a bit cooler but much clearer
An approaching weather system could bring strong to severe storms to parts of the tri-state area Friday afternoon into the late evening, bringing damaging winds, heavy rains along with a chance of hail and isolated tornadoes.
Northern New Jersey and the Hudson Valley are at the greatest risk for potential tornadoes Friday night, though the overall threat of that remains low. Virtually the entire tri-state area faces some threat of potentially severe weather (including thunderstorms, lightning, damaging winds and hail) with those areas north and west of New York City having the highest chances. The city is on the cusp of the "more likely" zone, which extends primarily north and west of the five boroughs. Check the latest severe weather alerts for your neighborhood here.
Friday morning could start off a bit soggy thanks to a few overnight showers, yielding to cloudy skies in the morning. The sun will break though just before noon, sending temperatures soaring to the unseasonable mid-80s and paving the way for potentially severe weather later in the day. Less than a week after record cold nights and early mornings, temperatures swing to the other end of the spectrum and will likely fall just short of Central Park's record high for this time of year, 90 degrees.
Coastal areas will remain cooler, only climbing to the lower 70s due to an onshore flow.
The storms first start making their way into the region after 5 p.m., and most severe weather is not expected to reach the city or the coast, instead turning into isolated showers or mil thunderstorms that won't arrive until the overnight hours.
The storms push out overnight, clearing the way for a partly cloudy Saturday with highs around 75 degrees. Sunday turns cooler and cloudier ahead of more rain expected early next week.
