Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment issued an air quality advisory for Larimer County Thursday due to moderate to heavy smoke from the Cameron Peak Fire.

The advisory, which includes Fort Collins, Loveland and Laporte, went into effect at 8 a.m. Thursday and remains in effect until 9 a.m. Friday. Other areas in the county could also be impacted by the smoke, the advisory noted.

"If smoke is thick or becomes thick in your neighborhood you may want to remain indoors," warned the advisory, noting that those who have heart disease or respiratory illnesses as well as the very young and elderly should be particularly cautious.

If moderate to heavy smoke is present in your area (think: if visibility is less than 5 miles in your neighborhood), the health department recommends you consider limiting outdoor activity. If smoke is making you ill, even when indoors, consider relocating, the advisory said.

What you need to know: The Cameron Peak Fire still burning, growing near Fort Collins

Smoke levels are expected to decrease "very gradually" late Thursday morning and into the afternoon. Some periods of smoke can be expected in areas east and southeast of the fire Thursday afternoon.

Heavier, longer-lasting smoke will impact locations along Poudre Canyon Road east into Fort Collins as well as north along the Laramie River to the Wyoming state line as smoke begins to drain from the fire area into lower-lying areas late Thursday evening through early Friday morning, according to the advisory.

The Cameron Peak Fire was first reported Aug. 13. It began between Chambers Lake and Cameron Peak and is burning primarily in the Roosevelt National Forest in an area about 15 miles directly southwest of Red Feather Lakes, 25 miles east of Walden and 35 miles northwest of Fort Collins.

As of Thursday morning, the fire was just over 23,000 acres with 6% containment, according to InciWeb.
