U.S. Forest Service team to evaluate watersheds in Cameron Peak burn area - Loveland Reporter-Herald

The U.S. Forest Service announced Wednesday that a Burn Area Emergency Response team has been assembled to evaluate the area torched by the Cameron Peak Fire.

According to a Forest Service press release, the team will include hydrologists, soil scientists, engineers, botanists, biologists, archaeologists and others who will work to quickly identify watersheds facing a higher risk of flooding, erosion, debris flows and rock slides.

BAER teams use satellite imagery that will be field-validated and adjusted where needed by soil specialists to produce a map that shows the levels of soil burn severity on the watersheds. Their report will then be shared with other agencies to help prepare for possible flooding and debris flow impacts.

“Everyone near and downstream from the burned area should remain alert and stay updated on weather conditions that may result in heavy rains over burn scars,” the release reads. “Flash flooding may occur quickly during heavy rain events. Be prepared to take action.”

Information will be posted at https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/7210/ as it becomes available.
