Fall color is rapidly spreading across Michigan. The Upper Peninsula has most areas at peak or very near peak, and changing fast. The Lower Peninsula has trees also quickly turning brilliant.

This is the fastest changeover to fall colors I’ve seen in years. Many of you in Lower Michigan are mentioning 25 percent change overnight. The reason for the fast change is the three day heavy frost a few weeks back.
Here’s the latest fall color map, as of 12:00 p.m. today, September 30, 2020. The map is based on all of the reports sent to us on the MLive Michigan Weather Facebook page and my personal Facebook page.
Cold air, with morning temperatures below freezing, is moving into northern Lower and the U.P. in the next few days. This will really accelerate the leaf color change. Remember, we still have warm water. My findings are that shoreline areas stay considerably more green for a week after inland areas reach peak color. Knowing what’s going to happen in weather, peak color will move through the eastern U.P. and inland areas of northern Lower in the next week. Take the fall color trip northward now through next weekend. The southern half of Lower Michigan should have its first widespread frost Saturday morning. After the Saturday frost, southern Lower will also have rapidly developing peak fall color.

So this weekend find peak color across the U.P. and northern Lower Michigan. The second week of October southern Lower should have great color.
