The Cameron Peak fire grew by more than 6,200 acres Friday due to hot and windy conditions, becoming the third-largest wildfire in Colorado’s recorded history.
The wildfire burning in the Roosevelt National Forest now sits at 111,114 acres, 173 square miles, and containment dropped to 25% after Friday’s growth, fire officials said in a Saturday morning Facebook post.
On Saturday morning, the fire destroyed an unknown number of buildings along Highway 14 between Rustic and the Fitch Hatchery, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office said. The buildings included private residences and businesses, but due to the extreme fire activity, crews have not been able to determine exactly which structures were destroyed, said Jered Kramer, a sheriff’s office spokesman.
The fire’s expansion Friday had already forced mandatory evacuations for residents in Glacier View, Red Feather Highlands subdivision and the Lady Moon area.
Conditions are expected to be ripe for fire growth again Saturday, with forecasters calling for winds up to 50 miles per hour in the foothills, South Park and Boulder County — with gusts between 30 and 40 mph in the northern mountains.
The heavy winds are also expected to produce heavy smoke near the fire area.
“The weather is not our side today,” Kramer said.
Along with the Pine Gulch fire — which is now 100% contained after burning 139,000 acres outside Grand Junction — 2020 has brought two of the three largest wildfires in state history.
All 10 of the largest fires in Colorado’s recorded history have come since 2002.
