VFD Chief Robert Fox gives advice on how to prepare for inclement weather

VICTORIA, Texas — During a live phone interview on the Newscenter 25 Sunrise show Tuesday morning, Victoria Fire Department Chief Robert Fox shared some tips with the community on how to prepare for future severe storms that may come through the Texas coast.

We are barely past the halfway point in hurricane season; which began Monday, June 1st, and will last through Monday, November 30th. September 10th marked the official peak of hurricane season.

Newscenter 25 Sunrise Anchor, Haley Closson did a Q&A with Chief Fox live on the air about the best ways to prepare for severe weather and this is what he shared.

Haley: What were some of the extra preparations VFD took to prepare for Tropical Storm Beta?

Chief Fox: “We brought in additional crews, in case of broken or downed power lines or water rescue was needed.” Chief Fox also said that they had a special Operations team, which specifies in water rescue at the ready.

Haley: What should you do if you are in a situation where you need to be rescued?

Chief Fox: “Stay calm and try to get to higher ground by getting on top of your car or on top of a table. Flag down VFD with a flash light or something to get their attention.”

Haley: If you need to evacuate, what are some items you can pack?

Chief Fox recommends the following items:

  • Make sure you have your medicines
  • Pack important documents, driver’s license, Social Security card, any identification
  • Write down important contact information, in case your cell phone fails/dies
  • Bring a portable charging device or battery, if available

Haley: Any lessons learned from hurricane Harvey that will help this time around?

Chief Fox:

  • The use of generators after the storm is over can be a threat by catching your house on fire or carbon-monoxide emergency
  • Be careful using electronic tools, chain saws, and electrical generators
  • Take caution driving near power lines, especially any that might have fallen during the storm
