Cameron Peak Fire crews prepare for windy conditions Friday and Saturday - Loveland Reporter-Herald

Crews fighting the Cameron Peak Fire west of Fort Collins kept the fire at 27% contained on Thursday despite the fire pushing over a containment line on the north edge of the thumb of burned acreage.

About 100 acres burned on the north edge, fire operations planning trainee Cory Carlson said in an online report Friday morning.

The fire, which started Aug. 13, is at 104,845 acres as of Friday.

Carlson said forecasts of high-speed winds Friday and Saturday are cause for concern.

On Thursday night, red-flag conditions were forecast for Friday and Saturday, with wind gusts of up to 40 mph possible Friday and up to 45 to 60 mph Saturday.

If winds come out of the west as expected, firefighters should be able to hold on to what they have, but any shift in direction could hinder operations, he said.

High winds also could hinder the use of helicopters on the fire and could make the use of planes to drop retardant less effective.

“If air operations are shut down, that’s going to affect us on the ground greatly,” Carlson said. “Its going to make it difficult to hold on to what we have.”

Though the thumb at the top of the fire area remains a concern, Carlson reported there was not much fire activity in the south section of the fire within Rocky Mountain National Park, and the west edge of the fire also continues to look good.

He said there is potential for the fire to back down toward Comanche Reservoir, but crews in that area are prepared.

Cause of the fire remains under investigation.
