Weekend Severe Weather Targets The South, Ohio Valley - The Weather Channel

  • A more organized threat of severe storms is expected this weekend.
  • Areas from Texas and Oklahoma to the mid-South and Ohio Valley are in the threat areas.
  • Damaging winds and large hail are the primary concerns, but an isolated tornado threat is possible.

Severe weather this weekend will threaten a broad area from Texas and Oklahoma to portions of the mid-South and Ohio Valley.

Severe storms over the past week have been isolated in nature across parts of the U.S. That could change this weekend as a mid-level disturbance offers the chance for a more concentrated threat of severe storms and heavy rainfall, particularly in the South.

Here's a look at what to expect.

Saturday could have two rounds of severe weather. A cluster of strong to severe storms could be ongoing in the morning from parts of Oklahoma into northern Texas. This round of storms could then spread toward Arkansas and Louisiana and Mississippi by later in the day.

Another batch of severe storms could fire up in parts of northern and central Texas later in the day and into the early evening hours behind that initial round.

Large hail and damaging straight-line winds are the primary concerns from both rounds of storms, but an isolated tornado threat cannot be ruled out. Localized flash flooding is also possible.

The threat of severe weather shifts farther east on Sunday. Severe storms are most possible from parts of Arkansas into southern Missouri, northern Mississippi, northern Alabama, western and middle Tennessee, western Kentucky and southern Illinois.

Damaging straight-line winds are the primary threat, but large hail is also possible. Heavy rainfall rates might trigger flash flooding in spots.
