The Cameron Peak Fire surpassed 15,000 acres, and crews will continue their work Wednesday under a red-flag warning for heightened fire conditions.
The fire is 15,738 acres, Rocky Mountain Incident Command reported Wednesday morning.
The InciWeb incident management website on Wednesday morning indicated there were 502 people working the fire.
A red-flag was warning issued for the mountains and foothills by the National Weather Service due to expected high winds and low humidity.
Winds of up to 55 mph and highs near 80 are expected in the mountains, according to the NWS.
On Tuesday, there was minimal growth with isolated pockets of burning, according to an evening update on InciWeb. "Firing operations along the Long Draw Road were completed and successful. Plans are to continue burning fuels along Highway 14 from Joe Wright Reservoir toward the junction of Highway 14 and Long Draw Road."
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but at a Tuesday afternoon news conference, Colorado Department of Public Safety Director Stan Hilkey said officials believe it was likely caused by human activity because there were no lightning strikes recorded in the area when the fire started.
Evacuations, road closures
There are no changes to evacuation areas, the Larimer County Sheriff's Office reported Wednesday morning.
But new road closures were put into placed Tuesday on Pingree Park Road (CR63E) from Colorado Highway 14 to Buckhorn Road (CR44). Buckhorn Road is also closed from Forest Service Road 352 to the CSU Mountain Campus.
The sheriff's office is issuing credentials for residents and property owners who are under evacuation orders or may be in the future.
Only residents currently in evacuation areas or those living in the communities of Red Feather Lakes, Crystal Lakes, Rustic and Pingree Hill are eligible to receive credentials. They can get them at stations open until 3:30 p.m. Wednesday:
- Red Feather Lakes Community Center, 58 Fire House Lane, Red Feather Lakes
- Crystal Lake Base Camp, 300 Tami Road, Red Feather Lakes
- Stove Prairie Elementary School, 3891 Stove Prairie Road, Bellvue
They can also get them from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at the Larimer County courthouse offices, 200 W. Oak St., Fort Collins in the first floor hearing room. Email oem@larimer.org for more information. ID is required, such as photo ID, copy of a utility bill with name and address, a record of ownership from the county assessor or a rental agreement showing a name and address.
