As authorities announced they had completely contained the Lewstone Fire, firefighters continued digging in against the Cameron Peak Fire on Tuesday, firming up defensive lines around the blaze that has grown past 21,000 acres.
The Lewstone Fire was sparked Saturday north of Rist Canyon Road and Pine Acres Way in the area northwest of Fort Collins. A rapid response held it to 165 acres, and authorities expect activity on Wednesday will primarily consist of “mop-up” work.
The Cameron Peak Fire remains larger and less predictable after it was ignited about a week and a half ago in national forest land about 40 miles west of Fort Collins.
As of Tuesday morning, the cause of the fire was still listed as “unknown.”

Operations section chief Paul Hohn of the Rocky Mountain Incident Command Team said a structure team is on the ground to protect homes in the Spencer Heights area northeast of the fire.
“Because of the nature of this fire and the number of structures that we have out there, we need to keep a presence,” he said.
He said homes were pretreated with sprinkler systems the previous night.
Crews continue to work on control lines around the fire, which is still uncontained. At least 742 firefighters are working the fire, supported by helicopters that have been assisting with water drops, transportation of firefighters and reconnaissance.
Aircraft not assisting with fire response have been temporarily restricted from entering the fire area.
Team meteorologist Darren Clabo said high temperatures and dropping humidity gave way to rain showers and thunderstorms later in the day.
“We didn’t get much rain at all, but we’ll take what we can get,” he said.
Clabo said more rain is expected later in the week, along with breezes during the weekend and heading into next week that could pose a challenge for firefighting.
Lewstone Fire
At 5:24 p.m., the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office posted on its Facebook page that the Lewstone Fire had been completely contained and related evacuation orders had been lifted.
The fire was reportedly holding its ground at about 165 acres as of Tuesday morning, and no growth was reported during the day.
Residents of the Pine Acres neighborhood were given the green light to return to their residences around 4 p.m. Tuesday, as an evacuation order that had been downgraded from mandatory to voluntary on Monday afternoon was lifted.
The sheriff’s office said no resources would be committed to the fire overnight, and 45 people would be on-scene Wednesday for “mop-up operations.”
