New tornado watch issued for part of Alabama; severe weather possible from Laura - AL.com

The fringes of Tropical Depression Laura are stirring up a few strong storms over Alabama today.

A new tornado watch has been issued for parts of north and central Alabama. It in part replaces an earlier watch that expired at 4 p.m. Here is the new watch, which will be in effect until 8 p.m.:

The Alabama counties in the new watch are Lamar, Marion, Winston, Fayette and Walker in central Alabama and Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Cullman, Madison and Morgan counties in north Alabama.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center said a few tornadoes will be possible in the watch area as well as wind gusts up to 65 mph.

A tornado warning is in effect for northeastern Winston County until 5:15 p.m.:

As of 4:45 p.m. the storm was located near Moreland, or 9 miles northwest of Arley, and was moving east at 25 mph.

The weather service said multiple trees have been reported down just northeast of Double Springs.

The Storm Prediction Center thinks there’s risk of severe weather for parts of north and central Alabama today.

Most of north Alabama and part of west-central Alabama now has a slight risk, which is Level 2 out of 5 and means scattered severe storms will be possible.

Areas in the slight risk as of Friday afternoon (and this will be updated through the day) include Huntsville, Decatur, Muscle Shoals, Cullman, Hamilton and Florence.

The rest of north Alabama and most of central Alabama has a marginal risk, which is Level 1 and means isolated severe storms will be possible. The marginal risk area has been expanded southward as of Friday afternoon.

Areas in the updated marginal risk include Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Gadsden, Anniston and Talladega.

The storms could come in several waves, and the strongest could have wind gusts up to 65 mph and torrential rain, according to the National Weather Service. Gusty winds will also be possible at times outside of storms.

Tropical systems are also infamous for quick-hitting tornadoes, and a few of those will be possible as well with the best chances being in northwest Alabama.

Rain and storms will be possible all day today, but the best chances for stronger storms will be through this evening, according to forecasters.

Laura made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane early Thursday in Louisiana.

It has continued to move inland and weakened to a tropical depression late Thursday night.

As of early Friday afternoon the center of Laura was located about 10 miles northwest of Paducah, Ky., and was moving to the east-northeast.

Laura’s tropical rain bands could bring a good dose of rain to Alabama.

According to the Weather Prediction Center 1 to 3 inches of rain will be possible in north Alabama as well as parts of Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Missouri and Kentucky. Isolated areas could get up to 5 inches.

The National Weather Service in Huntsville has issued a flash flood watch for Lauderdale, Colbert Franklin, Limestone and Lawrence counties in northwest Alabama.

The weather service said that northwest Alabama has already had a lot of rain this week, especially Franklin and Lawrence counties, so they will have a lower threshold for flash flooding.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham followed suit this morning and has issued a flash flood watch for several central Alabama counties: Blount, Etowah, Calhoun, Cherokee, Cleburne, Tuscaloosa, Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Talladega, Clay, Sumter, Greene, Hale, Perry, Bibb, Chilton, Coosa and Marengo.

It will be in effect through 1 a.m. Saturday.

One to 2 inches of rain will be possible in south Alabama, with isolated instances of 4 inches, according to the WPC.

Severe weather isn’t expected in south Alabama, but the National Weather Service in Mobile has extended a high risk of rip currents through Sunday night.
