A Reno doctor died while hiking on a remote Sierra peak Sunday.
On Monday, Fresno County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue recovered the body of Paul Sheykhzadeh, 52, after a hiker on Mt. Humphreys reported watching him fall from the nearly 14,000-foot peak located west of Bishop, Calif.
Sheykhzadeh reportedly fell off some large boulders on the west side of the peak, several hundred feet below the summit.
The hiker who witnessed Sheykhzadeh fall was able to make his way to him and confirm that he was dead. He alerted Inyo County Sheriff’s Office, who contacted the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office around noon on Sunday.
Fresno County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue was able to locate Sheykhzadeh’s body by helicopter Sunday. On Monday, using a California Air National Guard CH-47 Chinook helicopter, seven Fresno County Search and Rescue members were flown to the top Humphreys and rappelled 370 feet to Sheykhzadeh’s body, which was hoisted into the helicopter.
Sheykhzadeh was also a volunteer with the Washoe County Sheriff Office’s Search and Rescue team.
