Severe storms possible Sunday: Sunday afternoon brings the threat of severe storms. Most of central Alabama is under a marginal risk with the main threat being gusty winds up to 60 mph and quarter size hail. Afternoon highs will likely climb into the mid to upper 90s. Rain chances have increased a bit Sunday afternoon as an approaching cold front arrives. Any storm that develops could end up strong or severe with more storms possible on Monday, so make sure you monitor the forecasts. Remember that if thunder roars, go indoors.

Next Big Thing: The big story next week is that we can say goodbye to these extremely hot temperatures. A cold front will likely push through Alabama early next week, giving us a 70% chance for scattered showers and storms by Monday. A few storms are possible Tuesday afternoon as the front potentially stalls out across the state. Due to the uncertainty of the future track of any tropical system or whether a frontal boundary will be hanging out nearby, we have included a 40% chance for showers and storms on Wednesday. High temperatures will range from the low to upper 80s next week with morning lows gradually dropping to near 70 -- much more seasonable for late August. Thursday looks to potentially be our “coolest” morning with lows dropping closer to the mid 60s as drier air filters into the state.

Tropical Depression Ten

Tropical Update: We continue to monitor three spots in the tropics for development. The main area to watch is in the northwestern Caribbean and eastern Gulf of Mexico over the next several days. Tropical Depression Ten has now formed in the Caribbean and is expected to produce heavy rainfall across eastern Yucatan Peninsula and western Cuba. It is forecast to become a tropical storm Sunday, so we will be watching this closely, as it is expected to move into and effect areas along the eastern Gulf and become a hurricane.

There is still a lot of uncertainty on the future track and intensity of this system, which would ultimately have an impact on our local forecast here in Central Alabama. Right now, the main weather impacts look to stay to our southeast; however, if we see any changes, we will let you know on television, online, and through the First Alert Weather App.

Hurricane Franklin
Hurricane Franklin(WBRC)

The other big story is Hurricane Franklin. Franklin is located well east of the Bahamas over the open waters of the Atlantic. Winds are at 85 mph as of 4 p.m. Saturday evening and is tracking north-northwest at 8 mph. It looks like this storm will remain away from the East Coast of the United States early next week, but it will likely produce a high rip current threat for parts of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. The forecast keeps Franklin west of Bermuda Tuesday afternoon. Bermuda will need to continue to watch this storm for possible track changes. Any shift to the east could mean bigger impacts for Bermuda.

The next names on the 2023 hurricane list are Idalia and Jose. Hurricane season normally ramps up in September and comes to an end on November 30th.
