Addison County assessing damage from flash flooding; more severe weather on the way - WCAX

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. (WCAX) - Towns in Addison County are assessing the damage after flash flooding Thursday night wiped out roads and led to the rescue of at least three people in Middlebury. And forecasters say more severe weather is on the way Friday.

Work crews were busy on Painter Road in Middlebury Friday replacing dirt under the road that was washed out by flash flooding Thursday night.

Viewer video captured the moment Seymour Street turned into a swimming pool. State officials say Addison County towns received a month’s worth of rain in just three hours, leaving some residents stunned.

“It was almost like being on a cruise because you had water on all sides of the house,” said Richard Plaza of Middlebury, who had his driveway washed out.

The Vermont Urban Search and Rescue says three people were pulled from the roof of a car in Middlebury after the driver tried to go through high water and the car was swept away on Bridge Road.

A section of Route 116 between Quarry and Cady Roads in Middlebury turned into a sinkhole. Water broke through culverts and rushed into the hole from a pond on the other side of the street.

“The pond overtook the road and now we have about a 25-foot road opening here and we’re going to have to wait for the water to recede before we can do anything. It’s going to be at least later today before we get a good idea of the destruction here,” said VTrans’ Dan Shepard.

Route 125 in Hancock was also closed between Tucker Road and Route 100 after Tucker Brook flooded and caused a washout.

Hancock Fire Chief Jacques Veilluex says they are hoping to be able to open one lane. He says the bridge was built in 1941 and he’s worried about its structural integrity. “Looking underneath the bridge it was all undermined by the embankment. We ended up having to close the road -- it wasn’t safe for cars to go across. Talking with the people from the state that were here checking on it, they said it looked like it needed to be replaced,” he said.

If it reopens, Veilluex says there could be a weight limit. Crews are expected to be here throughout the afternoon.

Just up the road, more than 200 people participating in the annual Rainbow Gathering found themselves stuck at Texas Falls after a road washout. Michael Cherin arrived to deliver more than $500 worth of fresh produce and other groceries but was unable to get through. “There are older folks that can’t deal with this much rain, this much mud. So, in a crowd of 200 people that are up there right now, there’s people that definitely need to get in and out,” he said.

Back in Middlebury, residents were preparing for more wet weather and the potential for rivers to rise again. “There’s no place for the water to go so you just have to take it as it comes and be safe and pick up the pieces when it’s all over,” said local resident Scott Smith.

Residents in the area are warned not to drive in the flooded areas and to check the 5-1-1 website for updates on road closures.

More severe weather could be on the way Friday. The National Weather Service has issued flood and thunderstorm watches through this evening for a number of locations in our region.

Addison County, which was spared from the worst of the flooding that hit Vermont last month, is one of the five counties that has not yet qualified under the federal major disaster declaration.
