A robust storm system appears likely to emerge from the Rocky Mountains this weekend, bringing several threats from the Northern Plains to the Deep South. Heavy snow and ice are expected in the cold sector across the Plains and Upper Midwest, while severe storms and flooding take aim at the Midwest, Mississippi Valley, and Mid-South. This system is still evolving so be sure to stay up to date with WeatherNation for updates.
A strong trough is expected to move through the Four Corners during the late week, ejecting into the Plains by Saturday morning. A developing surface low will help to usher in moisture across the region in the developing warm sector, bringing ample humidity and warm air as far north as the Midwest.
Strong shear will be in place in the upper-levels, however, energy for storms appears somewhat limited at this time. Regardless, scattered severe thunderstorms appear likely Saturday afternoon and evening, with the severe weather threat shifting south along the front on Sunday.
The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued outlooks for this potential severe weather event on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s threat is focused around the Midwest from Kansas through Wisconsin. Outlooks issued in the day 4-8 range typically indicate moderate to high confidence in at least scattered severe storms. If you live in these areas, you should be watching the forecast closely in the days ahead. All modes of severe weather appear possible at this time.
Sunday’s risk will be much farther south, focused mainly in Arkansas. The risk will likely be expanded more as forecast confidence grows. Areas from Texas through Tennessee and Kentucky should monitor the forecast for updates.
With ample moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, heavy rain is expected to develop in areas that have seen significant rain already over the past few weeks. This will lead to a flooding threat from the Midwest through the Deep South and potentially Gulf Coast.
A few thunderstorm could develop late Friday night across the region in the warm sector, however, Saturday afternoon and evening will likely see the more robust round of storm development. Stay tuned to WeatherNation for updates as additional model data comes in for a more precise forecast.
