With firefighters increasing their containment of the Cameron Peak Fire for the first time in weeks Tuesday, fire managers said Wednesday that they are working to keep that momentum going.
According to the Cameron Peak Fire media team’s Wednesday morning update, firefighters established further containment Tuesday in the section of the fire just south of Colo. 14 from east of Glen Echo and west of the Pingree Park Road. Containment on the fire now stands at 8%, rising from the 4% that it dropped to in early September.
Crews will continue this containment effort along Colo. 14, Pingree Park Road, Long Draw Road and the Buckhorn Road to Comanche Reservoir, according to the morning update.
Crews did see the fire flare up in the Thumb, the northwestern area of the fire in the Green Ridge area along Colo. 14, because of the increased winds that hit the fire Tuesday. According to the morning update, five heavy helicopters worked in the area to try to keep fire activity down so that crews could continue to make progress on sections of the line.
Construction of fire lines farther back from the fire and efforts to protect buildings continued in the Crystal Lakes, Red Feather and Glacier View subdivisions, the media team said.
According to the morning update, for Wednesday and the next several days, fire activity is expected to increase due to “drying fuels, warm temperatures and low humidity.”
The health advisory said the smoke from wildfires in Western states as well as the Cameron Peak Fire prompted an air quality health advisory from the Colorado Air Pollution Control Division. Larimer County is one of the counties under the advisory, which is in effect from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday.
According to a news release, if the smoke becomes thick in a neighborhood, residents should remain indoors, especially the very young and the elderly and people who have heart disease or respiratory illnesses.
The release suggested that residents limit outdoor activity when moderate to heavy smoke is present and to consider relocating temporarily if smoke is present indoors and is making residents ill.
The release added that if visibility is less than five miles in a neighborhood, smoke has reached “levels that are unhealthy.”
