While containment of the Cameron Peak Fire continues to grow, so does the total acreage.

According to the Cameron Peak Fire media team, fire behavioral was minimal on Tuesday which led the fire to grow by only 15 acres, reaching a total of 23,037 acres. Containment, though, increased to 6% due to better mapping of the western edge of the fire.

On Tuesday, firefighters were able to shift their attention closer to the fire perimeter as other indirect lines were finished out.

This work continued into Wednesday, as crews continued to monitor and patrol structures that had been prepped over the past few weeks. This prep and assessment work will continue in communities northeast of the fire and along Buckhorn Road.

Work Wednesday also consisted of heavy equipment continuing to improve indirect lines established over the last few days as well as continuing the construction a line north of Crown Point Road.

In the southwest side of the fire, crews will continue to scout for opportunities to construct lines in the Coral Creek area northwest of the Rocky Mountain National Park boundary and will monitor structure protection in place along the western portions of Colo. 14 and Long Draw corridors.

As fire mitigation work continues, crews continue to see the effects of COVID-19 as a fourth case was confirmed by the fire team Wednesday.

The first three individuals were confirmed to be COVID-19 positive late in August. The first three were part of an engine crew together. Two of those three were quarantined in a hospital and have received two rounds of testing, while the third remains hospitalized according to Jeff Basamanowicz, COVID-19 coordinator for the Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team.

Basamanowicz said that Tuesday night the fourth individual was evaluated for respiratory complaints and taken to the hospital where he later tested positive for COVID-19.

Because of these new infections, the fire team is requiring temperature checks and a COVID-19 questionnaire to enter the command post and fire line.

To limit contact between workers, Basamanowicz said that the team is now using QR codes for electronic screening, check-in and demobilization. They are also doing all informational briefings over the phone or Zoom, and requiring masks and social distancing for all those working on the fire.

“We have received a large number of testing supplies from the state, and we have made them available for voluntary testing for any individual on the fire line (and command post) who would like to be tested,” Basamanowicz said. “Specifically we are focusing on individuals who are demobilizing and leaving the fire to head back to their home agencies.”

Basamanowicz added they are working with public health officials to follow all the CDC guidelines to “keep everyone on this fire line safe.”
