Power lines and trees were reported down in several areas including in the cities of Canby, Granite Falls and Sacred Heart.
"Uprooted trees, a lot of big branches down," said Granite Falls Mayor Dave Smiglewski.
Many, many streets were impassable immediately after the storm due to large branches and even entire trees uprooted. Homeowners were at work with rakes and chainsaws cleaning up, and Granite Falls Fire Department vehicles could be seen all over town assisting.
Smiglewski also said parts of the city are without power.
"I am not sure how widespread it is," Smiglewski said.
First responders were guarding a downed power pole and line, and directing traffic around it, at the intersection of 17th Street and 11th Avenue on the west side of the city near Minnesota West Community and Technical College.
Police cars were guarding Seventh Street south of U.S. Highway 212 where a power pole was leaning.
A large pine near the playground in Winter Park, along Ninth Avenue, went down and the top of the tree was lying on a power line.
Another power line was reported down in the area of Sixth Avenue near downtown.
The Canby Fire Department, on Facebook, asked people to stay home until they had a chance to start cleaning up the damage.
"We have already had a lot of traffic driving thru zones that are not safe!" the post said.
Radar reports were indicating 60 mph wind gusts in the storm as it moved through the area.
As he got his first look after the storm, Smiglewski reported not seeing a lot of major structural damage in Granite Falls, though there were some buildings with roof damage. The Yellow Medicine East High School was one of the buildings with roof damage as well as water damage.
"It is pretty significant," Smiglewski said.
The storm hit Granite Falls around 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Smiglewski did not report any hail damage.
Street flooding could be seen in many areas of the city immediately after the storm, but Smiglewski said the city's stormwater system seemed to be working well.
Crews were out cleaning up the damage soon after the storm moved to the east. The Yellow Medicine County Sheriff's Office posted on Facebook that residents in Granite Falls and Canby with downed trees and branches should place them in the boulevard to be collected.
