A "very active'' 500-acre forest fire in the Chambers Lake area of the upper Poudre Canyon has closed Colorado Highway 14 from Rustic to Gould in central Larimer County and prompted mandatory and voluntary evacuations in the area around Chambers Lake Campground.
There is no timeline for the road to reopen.
The Larimer County Sheriff's Office sent an alert Thursday afternoon mandating an evacuation for residents and businesses to leave the area due to imminent fire danger.
"The area from the intersection of Highway 14 north to Four Corners, as well as the area around Chambers Lake should evacuate the area as quickly as possible,'' the alert stated late Thursday afternoon.
The alert asked people not to delay by taking belongings and to evacuate by traveling north into Wyoming.
Residents asked to evacuate can text LCEVAC to 888777 for updates.
According to the Canyon Lakes Ranger District of the Roosevelt National Forest, 40 firefighters are on the ground are battling the blaze but high winds grounded an array of air support that was sent by the Rocky Mountain Air Coordination Center.
About 5:15 p.m. the agency established a Temporary Flight Restriction for the area over what they are calling the Cameron Peak Fire.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
