BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) We saw another day of record-setting heat on Tuesday, and that has Burlington Electric asking customers to reduce their energy usage to defeat the peak. Our Dom Amato spoke with officials at the utility company to find out what customers in the city need to know.
Burlington Electric is urging customers to turn off air conditioners and wait until later at night to run bigger, energy-draining appliances. That includes waiting to use the washer and dryer, dishwasher and turning off nonessential lights until 9 p.m.
Officials say peak demand for electricity in New England is during the summer, which puts more strain on the region's electric grid.
The Burlington Electric Department says the majority of their costs-- which get passed on to customers-- depend on the amount of energy used by the community during the summer peak.
Reducing energy during these peak hours-- 5-9 p.m.-- can help keep costs low for all customers.
"Anything you do during the peak hours, which tonight is going to be from 5-9 p.m., helps. If you can unplug a charging cord, if you can not use as much A/C during that time, maybe adjust the thermostat, that can help us save energy during the peak," said Darren Springer of BED.
This is the first time this season BED has issued the Defeat the Peak alert, and if they meet the target amount of energy saved, those savings go back into the Burlington community. Through the program, a nonprofit or charity will receive a $1,000 donation. This time it will be to the Ronald McDonald House in Burlington.

To help ease the energy load across the state, other utility companies like Green Mountain Power tap into their network of stored battery power.
For comparison, officials say there is enough power in the thousands of batteries in Vermont to take 18,000 homes or nearly 7% of the state's homes off the grid at once, in the end, saving money for all customers.
